Nigel Sylvester and Nike have a long running relationship that dates back to the days of Nike 6.0. When Nike made a major overhaul throughout the action sports department, the Nike 6.0 line came to an end, and all Nike action sports footwear now became part of the Nike SB line. Nigel, a pro bmx rider was immediately attracted to the Nike sb dunk line due to the comfort, padding and grip the dunk provides when riding. Nigel can be seen riding in a variety of new and classic designs from the SB department, so it only was natural that he get the chance to design his own dunk high. The Nigel Sylvester Nike SB dunk high "S. O. M. P.", short for standing on my pedals was the result of the collaborative effort between Nigel and Nike.
Nigel Sylvester teamed up with the legendary DJ Clark Kent to create a beautiful dunk high that was the perfect combination of premium yet durable materials that could withstand the daily abuse of numerous days out riding in the streets. The dunk high that the two created sports a buttery smooth all black upper that uses something Nike calls "Euporia" nubuck, a material previously exclusive to the Nike AF1 Bespoke program at 21 Mercer. The all black upper also utilizes Nike's famous safari print on the eyelets and around the heel to provide some extra detail. The sneaker also utilizes a silver swoosh and heel tab to bring extra attention to the all black upper. All of the aforementioned features sit atop a white midsole-gum outsole combo that completes not only the look, but helps in the performance area of this bmx ready sneaker. A special insole donning a S. O. M. P. logo and Nigel Sylvester's signature round out the subtle but eye catching details used throughout the collaborative effort.
Shortly after pictures of the S.O.M.P. dunk surfaced, a release date also was announced, the sneakers would release March 8th in limited quantities at very select Nike SB retailers including Brooklyn Projects LA and Premier. When Nigel took to Instagram to announce he would be at the release for his sneaker at Dave's Warehouse in Soho, I immediately made plans to make a trip to New York City in hopes of securing a pair. When Friday came around, I packed a bag, got in the car and made the trip downstate to NYC. After arriving to Dave's Warehouse at midnight, the campout began, my cousin and I had our chairs set up in line, numbers 5 and 6. Thankfully the crowd was made up of a good group of guys, it allowed us catch some sleep in the car for a few hours without having to worry about our spots in line. The shop opened up at 12pm when Nigel Arrived for the release of his collaborative effort with Nike SB. Nigel chilled in the shop, taking pictures and signing boxes for all the customers who were lucky enough to get their hands on a pair of the S.O.M.P. dunks, which made the overnight camp much more worthwhile. The release was handled perfectly and to our surprise, we were able to get back in line to go around for round 2, so of course I had to grab a second. I am extremely happy that I was able to get my hands on a couple pairs on these dunks, they're easily one of my favorite releases from the team at Nike SB this year.
Now take a look at some high quality photos I shot around Albany, NY of the Nike SB Nigel Sylvester S.O.M.P. Dunk High. Let us know what you think of this release from Nike SB and Nigel Sylvester.
