Today we got our first look at the new West NYC x New Balance collaboration. The first go around between the two brands ended up giving us what turned out to be an extremely popular and well thought out New Balance MT580 dubbed the "Alpine Guide". The "Alpine Guide" 580 sported a retro theme that based on West NYC owner, Lester Wasserman's love for retro alpine skiing gear. The "Alpine Guide" 580 was well received when they dropped back in September 2012, and have since become harder and harder to find on the secondary market. Although West NYC was definitely not the first team to use the MT580 as a base shoe for their collaboration with New Balance, many would argue they easily beat out any other collaborative efforts that used the MT580 as a base.
The upcoming collaboration from West and New Balance utilizes the New Balance 530, another often forgotten silhouette from the New England based sneaker company. This time around, the guys at West NYC took a different approach for inspiration, instead of using a backstory to bring the colorway to life, West looks to classic fluorescent colorways used back when some of the most popular retro runners first released. White, black, and grey on the upper combine with what appear to be purple and mango colored accents to give the sneakers a retro feel to them. The use of an iridescent looking encap midsole and speckling used on the medial New Balance logo help give the sneakers some extra detail. In addition to the midsole and NB logo, the West NYC NB530 features an insole that sports all over West NYC logos made up of all the colors used throughout the sneaker.
The West NYC x New Balance 530 "Project 530" are set to release next Saturday, October 18th both in-store and online. Sticking with the "Project 530" theme, the sneakers will release in-store at 5:30am on the 18th, followed by an online release through West's own website at 5:30 that night. Based on typical allocation of New Balance collaborations, chances are the West NYC "Project 530" will pop up at other New Balance retailers not too long after the in-store release at West but stay tuned for more info.
Everyone will have different opinions but I have to say that i'm letdown by this collaboration. The first West NYC x New Balance collaborative effort was unique and really brought something different to the table. While I can respect the approach West took on these in hopes of putting something different out into the market in a time of over saturation of the same ideas, these just aren't for me, both the model and the colorway. Take a look at some pictures of the new collaboration between the NYC retailer, West NYC and New Balance and let us know in the comment section what your thoughts are on the West NYC x New Balance "Project 530".
