The Austrailian based sneaker magazine, Sneaker Freaker is teaming up the Asics on another collaborative effort. The two teams had previously teamed up one a Gel Lyte 3, nicknamed the "Alvin Purple", which combined multiple shades of grey and purple with hits of black and white to create a unique, beautiful pair of sneakers. When the collaborative effort dropped back in 2010, US boutiques got the short end of the stick when no shops were named on the official retailer list. Fast forward to summer 2014 when the famed New Jersey sneaker store, Packer Shoes teases via instagram, a possible re-release of the the Asics x Sneaker Freaker Alvin Purple Gel Lyte 3. Not long after the first teaser photos went up, we learned that Packer Shoes would be re-releasing this Asics classic on July 3rd, 2014, both in-store and online. Needless to say, many collectors were chomping at the bit to get their hands on the Asics collaboration, as this was the first time these were released in any US boutiques. The shoes were an immediate hit and of course, sold out both in-store, and online.
Fast forward back to October 2014 and we have officially received the announcement that round 2 between Asics and Sneaker Freaker is on the way. The sneaker, nicknamed the Melvin(Son of Alvin), will see a release later this month on October 17th. This time around, the guys at Sneaker Freaker switched things up and decided to use the Asics Gel Kayano Trainer as the base sneaker for the collaboration. Black sport mesh combines with yellow and grey hits on the upper to give the Melvin a unique look. The upper also features speckled laces and hits of 3m on the medial asics logos. A speckled midsole panel and a small hit of purple on the heel which pays homage to the Mevlin's father, Alvin, round out the details Sneaker Freaker used to bring the Alvin to life.
Take a look at some high quality pictures provided by Sneaker Freaker of their new collaboration with Asics on the Gel Kayano Trainer. A release date had been announced for October 17th, but little information on release specifics such as allocation or the possibility of an online release, are available at this time.
